While diagnosing a problem with another plugin, the developed discovered the reason was a conflict with diggdigg.
I am posting his email here in the hope that it can get fixed.

is installed
which does also write in to the 'the_content' hook or add a filter/action to
'the_content'
in WordPress the digg digg plugin generates an error.
Without any other plugin the digg digg code looks like the following:

I edited the digg digg plugin on his site and deleted the code from the
source
file. And now it's working and the sidebar is displayed as it should.
IMPORTANT:
this is only a temporary solution. As soon as the digg digg gets updated the
issue
with the sidebar will be there again."
